Abdominoplasty,
known more commonly as a "tummy tuck", is
a major surgical procedure to remove excess skin
and fat
from the middle and lower abdomen and to tighten the
muscles of the abdominal wall. The procedure can
dramatically
reduce the appearance of a protruding abdomen. But bear
in mind, it does produce a permanent scar, which,
depending
on the extent of the original problem and the surgery
required to correct it, can extend from hip to hip.
If you're considering abdominoplasty, this will give you
a basic understanding of the procedure-when it can help,
how it's performed, and what results you can expect.
The most common approach involves an incision across
the lower abdomen, a little above the pubic area. An
incision is also made around the belly button to free
it from the surrounding skin. The skin is separated
from the abdominal wall and lifted up above the rib
cage. Next the surgeon pulls loose tissue from the left
and right of the abdomen together, towards the center
and sutures it together. This tightens muscles, provides

After
surgery, you will have some soreness and discomfort
which can be controlled with medication. You may
be up and around in a day or two, but you should
avoid over activity and straining for three to four
weeks. You will most likely have a drain in place
after the surgery, which will be removed within 5
- 7 days in our office. You may have to wear a light
support garment for several months.
